Key Achievements

Tangible progress in advancing gender equality across chemistry departments on the island of Ireland

🏆 Athena Swan Success

Supporting institutional advancement

Multiple chemistry departments have successfully progressed in Athena Swan awards within the network period. Departments have recognized that support from the network was instrumental in helping them achieve advancement and decreasing the administration burden of preparing applications.

💾 Shared Resources

Open-access knowledge repository

Created a comprehensive best practices repository with documented implementations, impact metrics, and implementation guides. This fully accessible resource enables seamless knowledge exchange and mutual support across all network institutions.

📈 Evidence-Based Practices

Documented impact and outcomes

Developing a comprehensive collection of thoroughly documented best practices with measurable outcomes, including policy uptake rates, improved representation metrics, and enhanced support mechanisms. Each practice includes detailed implementation guides and ongoing support from network members, with our repository continuously expanding as we identify and validate new effective approaches.

💰 Funding Success

Securing resources for growth

The network successfully secured funding from the Higher Education Authority's Gender Equality Enhancement Fund (GEEF), with Trinity College Dublin leading the application and delivery. This funding supports our role as the first national EDI STEM Network covering the island of Ireland, enabling network development, best practices documentation, and website creation.

🤝 Collaborative Culture

Building a supportive community

Fostered a collaborative environment where departments actively assist each other in achieving gender equality goals. Network members report that access to shared practices, data, and peer support has been valuable in their EDI advancement efforts across all participating institutions.

🌱 Network Growth

Expanding our community of practice

Successfully established comprehensive coverage across all chemical sciences departments on the island of Ireland, creating a strong foundation for continued collaboration. The network serves as a model for other academic communities and has attracted interest from institutions seeking to replicate our collaborative approach.

Looking Forward

Our vision for the future of gender equality in chemistry

Future Vision for Chemistry Gender Equality

Our Ambitions

Our ambition is to grow the network to include representatives from industry, policymakers, and other stakeholders, which will undoubtedly have a wider impact on the chemistry landscape across Ireland.

We aim to become a model for other academic communities, inspiring similar disciplinary networks across STEM and beyond to work on their own specific challenges. Through our collaborative approach and evidence-based best practices, we're creating a blueprint for systemic change in EDI that can be adapted and implemented across different disciplines and fields.

By demonstrating the power of cross-institutional collaboration within chemistry, we hope to catalyse the formation of similar networks in physics, biology, engineering, and other disciplines, each addressing their unique EDI challenges while sharing best practices and lessons learned.
